I was fiddling with the idea of a breakfast smoothie that didn’t involve the usual banana-sugar-milk trifecta. You know the drill, right? Bananas seem to be the backbone of every single smoothie that exists. But then there’s this thing—ragi. Yeah, I know, sounds like something only health nuts go for.
Anyway, so we’re looking at ragi—a cereal grain—getting a spotlight here. I know, right? You’d think cereal grains were only doomed to live in breakfast bowls or something. But the universe works in mysterious ways (or maybe it’s just the internet).
It’s labeled as ‘iron-rich.’ Not to sound too much like a late-night infomercial, but apparently, iron is important. Like I needed another reason to feel anemic on random Tuesday mornings. So I ventured into the kitchen, eyes peeled for inspirations sans the usual suspects: no milk, no sugar, heck, not even a banana. They basically wanted a smoothie named Iron Man without Tony Stark’s bank account backing it.
I plopped some oats into the mix just to anchor it down to reality because what’s life without a little rebellion against the title? Added something green and leafy, and tossed in a handful of almonds. Grinding those ragi grains felt like a science project. Honestly, it kind of looked like I was casting spells with that concoction.
Fast forward to blending time. I mean, no sugar, so I threw in some dates because come on, nature’s candy, right? Just when I thought I was set, ladies and gentlemen, I almost slipped a banana in from sheer habit. Caught myself though. Oh, and here’s where it got random: halfway through, I stumbled across this brilliant hack involving mint leaves. Tossed those in for a fresh twist.
Taste test: interesting. Not in a ‘spit it out immediately’ way, more like, ‘why have I done this?’ kind of way. Ragi gives a bit of a nutty flavor—thankfully, and probably best consumed with a second straw in case you need a quick exit strategy.
Iron-rich gets ticked off the list, and maybe I’m marginally healthier because of it? Jury’s out. Anyway, still trying to wrap my head around why we started swapping crucial smoothie hallmarks with grains, but hey, onward in the never-ending quest for that health glow mingled with bewilderment. I really need a nap now. Or at least a coffee. Seriously.
